The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is the U.S. Census-defined seven county region surrounding the city of Pittsburgh in Western Pennsylvania, United States. The counties include Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland.

The area is considered by many to be only part of the true Pittsburgh area. For instance, the Pittsburgh "market" as used by radio and TV claims the counties of Indiana, Greene, and Lawrence in Pennsylvania, as well as Monongalia, Preston, and Garrett counties in West Virginia and Maryland. See the Pittsburgh DMA for more precise definition of this area. There is also considerable evidence linking the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia and the east-central and southeastern counties of the state of Ohio; see Pittsburgh Tri-State for further data supporting this minority claim. Although separated from each other by natural barriers the two regions are growing more and more close.
